Dont know if things have changed, but in my opinion, you should always see the card, check it, and write the number on the back of the cheque yourself.
If you allow the customer to do it, and dont check the card details, how will you ever know that the cheque guarantee number is right? If its not right, the cheque isnt guaranteed, and could potentially being rejected by the bank if the customer has insufficient funds. If you've parted with goods and the cheque bounces, you're stuffed.

If you receive cheques by mail, and dont see the card, but the customer has written the number, (or a number) on the back, then it may be guaranteed, it may not, you'll never know without seeing the card.

Thanks for your replies. On checking with the bank, it appears that if cheques are sent in, rather than written out at the time of transaction, the payee may write the details on the back of the cheque.
