I'm thinking of going self-employed, and I need to know what accounts software you use to do your clients bookkeeping services?

    Ive just downloaded a sample of IRIS Bookeeping (www.iris.co.uk).

    Its a basic software but has all the main nuts and bolts and multiple company versions dont cost a 'bomb' like Sage does!

    I have looked on the iris website and couldn't find any prices for the software, do you know how much it is?

    I have had a look at the new Microsoft accounting software on the microsoft site which looks quite good, its only out in america at the moment, planned for the UK later this year. According to an article on the telegraph site SAGE are up in arms because it will rival them big style and according to the aritcle the accounting package will be included in the future versions of Office. No wonder Sage are concerned!!

    In our practice we use a variety of different programs depending on the complexity of client's records. We have about half a dozen large limited companies on Sage Line 50; another dozen or so smaller ones on QuickBooks (good for those buying and selling on credit)

    However, for a sole trader going into business I would recommend Moneysoft's Money Manager program. It's incredibly user-friendly, and although its not as flash as some others, you're much less likely to get in a mess. It can run sales and purchase ledgers, client accounts, fixed asset registers etc. It costs about £40, with a good final accounts prep add-on program for about £60.

    Go to the iris website and select the 'Small Businesses' section form the right, then select 'IRIS Shop from the top.

    Have you downloaded a copy of the IRIS Bookkeeping yet? I've tried it for a few days now and have to say Ive found rather basic and full of problems, to the extent I wouldnt trust it with clients books.

    I would strongly reccommend VT Final Accounts and Transaction. It is very well priced and can include a set of final accounts templates. Try www.vtsoftware.co.uk

    Please can you tell me how you set up your Excel spreadsheet for bookkeeping. Do you just use a simple cash book format, or something more complicated?

    I have always used an accounting software package but I have recently met a client who is not yet ready to make a decision about what software to use. More immediately he needs his books up to date and I have offered to compile the figures using Excel. How do you do this? Do you just have a sheet for each ledger with formulas for accounts balances. Would you be prepared to send me a sample template?

    Any help gratefully received.

    I do book keeping for 4 client i use a template that i made up my self on excel. I have had compliments from the accountants these businesses use. it is only basic and does not record customer or suppliers accounts but i made one up for those as well if you would like me to send you a page to look at please let me know
