Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Hiya!
I completed the ECR skills test in December and from what I can remember, the paper was particularly long, there were some areas that you definitely had to ensure you understood what they were asking for. Otherwise it was generally ok.
Unfortunately, no one will be able to give you a copy of the skills test as this is held with your college until the paper is no longer used for these exercises.
Some colleges might use their own (AAT approved) tests or they may use one generated by AAT.
The best advice I can give is to practice ALL the past papers and ensure you've completed most if not all the questions in your text books.
You'll be fine, don't stress!!! Remember, you can't generally fail this test. If there's one area you're struggling with, your tutor should tell you and you can complete your test at a later date. However to avoid this... keep practising!!!!
Good luck!!!

Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Thanks for your response to my comment. But like everyone else you can revise constantly and still find something in the exma/test that knocks you of line.
if anyone out there has a exmaple of one they have done as revision, please help me and forward it on to me.
thanks again

Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Unfotunately, you'll find that with any test/exam you do. No amount of revision will prepare you for trick questions.
The trick is to remain calm if something does throw you, read the question bit by bit and attempt it.
The positive way to look at it is if you feel you're doing really well in your test and only 1 question throws you, then it's likely you've passed!! You'll get points for the way you attempt the question anyway.
Remain positive! You'll be fine!!!
Why don't you contact AAT for some example papers. They may be able to help you if you don't get anything from forum members.
Take care!

Just read your message; Preparing Reports and Returns is Unit 7 and not ECR. ECR is a costing paper.

I wouldn't worry too much about your skills test. I did mine last week and I barely revised for it.
So long as you know Graphs, moving averages, Vat theory and transfers, you should be alright. I'd learn the theory really... you'll be fine.
Good luck!0 -

Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Hi,
Unit 7 skills test was a nightmare. I did not go through a lot of the questions or practice simulations in the Workbook, even though I knew it would help me and I got Competent with extra work. My tutor said that my extra work was good so I passed. I want to make sure that this does not happen again especially as I have got two simulations left for intermediate. Can anyone advise me as to how to go about studying for the next two simulations and also the exam (FRA) which I have got in June. Would it be a good idea to do ALL the questions in the tutorial book plus all the questions in the workbook and all the practice simulations. This was my idea anyway. Should I do the whole lot once or twice? Is this method of studying going to help me pass. Please help, because I am so confused.

Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Hi JayneHogan
Firstly, congratulations on being competant for Unit 7!
Personally, I would take your own advice! ECR and FRA are very different papers to the Unit 7 Skills Test and given that these two are Examined papers, I have to admit that their skills tests are very different.
Practice, practice, practice!!!
Do as many past papers, text book questions and text book simulations/mock exams as you can! Obtain further questions from your tutor. The more exposure you have to all the different types of questions will be more than enough to help you pass both exams and skills test!
However, DO NOT PANIC if you come across something you don't understand. Remember you have the support of forum members and your tutor to help you become competant!
When I was studying ECR and FRA, I attempted to do past papers once on my own as much as I could, this identified areas in which I struggled. Once I went over those areas again, I attempted the paper again and found it obviously easier, but if I tried the next past paper I found doing that easier because of what I'd learned from the previous paper. I hope this makes sense? Please be aware however that everyone has their own methods of study, and I know it's frustrating to try and figure out what works for you. If in doubt, perhaps consult your tutor, that's what they are there for!
All the best with the remainder of intermediate! I'm sure you'll be fine - so long as you put in the time to practice, practice, practice
All the best

Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Hi Shona,
Thanks for the advice. I will definitely put in the practice for the rest of Intermediate. Have you finished AAT or are you studying for technician level? What is the rest of AAT like because I am already finding this hard. I have a job interview tomorrow for the position of accounts assistant in a law firm but they are also expecting me to be able to type at 30 words per minute. I can only do 15 words per minute  . My consultant at the agency that I am with said that the typing is not the main part of the job but I am not sure that they will take me with the typing that I have. What do you think that I should do?
Yours,
Jayne Hogan0 -
Re:ECR SKILLS TEST
Hi Jayne
Unfortunately I haven't yet finished AAT. I've just started my Technician stage and fingers crossed, my results tomorrow should hopefully show no need to do a resit of the ECR paper!
I haven't found the courses too difficult actually. I'm originally from South Africa and one of the subjects I was taught at school was Accountancy so I'm lucky I've had the foundation of that under my belt. Fortunately, I've also been in a job where my employer encourages exposure to work I can do or be trained on along side what I'm studying. Most accounting practices or companies with an accounting department will probably encourage this as well!
Personally for me, I've become more confident the more past papers and additional questions I do.
As for your interview tomorrow - GOOD LUCK!!! I think you'll be surprised at how many words you're able to type in a minute, 30 words is usually the norm but I seriously wouldn't worry about how many words you can type, so long as you can type. At the end of the day you are an accountant, you do numbers... very rarely do you do letters
The other thing to think about is, once you get used to the way they do things, your typing will get faster. Don't let something like this make you nervous for your interview.
Your consultant is absolutely right!!!
Show confidence in yourself and promote your ability to learn things quickly. Express an interest in the accounting field i.e. figures, comparisons, historic trends and future company potential. These are all things attributed to becoming an accountant. Perhaps think about the bigger picture, i.e. what you'd like to be once you're qualified i.e. Management Accountant, Corporate Accountant etc. Do you see yourself studying passed AAT i.e. for CIMA or ACCA?
Make sure however that the company is able to support you with your goals!
I hope it all goes well for you!!!
Best of luck
Shona
