I have a well established business for sale offering book-keeping services and a payroll agency. Based in Wiltshire it was established in 1983 has a wide range of clients and employs two experienced and reliable book-keepers. A good business but I would like to retire.

    Unfortunately, you are just a little too far from me (South Dorset) otherwise I would jump at the chance.

    I am in the process of setting up a similar business. You seem to have been succesful, do you have any tips for us new to self-employment?

    There is so much discussion about this and so difficult to answer. I am sure every one of the Self Employed Members has started in a different way. In my case I started working for a local firm and because the owners were missing for most of the day became the point of contact for most people dealing with them. When I was ousted by their Mother joining the business and making my life difficult I found another job and gave in my notice. Coincidently I walked through the town the day my job was advertised and was stopped by several people who I had been dealing with asking me to work for them and my business was launched. As a single Mum with two small daughters it took a while before I went completely self employed but have never looked back.

    HOWEVER I notice adverts appearing in the local paper all the time for people offering these services and after a few weeks they stop and if you telephone them they say they are not doing it anymore. I presume because they could not get started. I think it very difficult if you do not have a regular income or other support. Others may advise otherwise but you may need to find employment first.

    I cannot beleive I am advising this. As an employer I find it very annoying when someone I have invested in and trained uses me as a leap into self employment. It has happened a couple of times but not in recent years.

    Sorry I cannot be of more help. One thing you need to be aware of though is bad payers. I often find that new clients are in a mess and need a lot of work to catch them up to date, often in a great hurry. In the early days I would work all hours to do this and then stuggle to be paid, "you can see the financial position I am in" would be the answer when billed. Now I make sure I receive payment as I progress, I do not have bad debts!

    I am in Devizes, may be too far, although it could be run remotely some of the time. The 'girls' who work for me have been happy to run the business without me being here for a lot of the time since I became semi-retired a couple of years ago. Some of this time I am on my boat and completely out of touch.

    I should have added to my last reply that most of our work comes from word of mouth now and having an office in the town helps.
