Ive been offered to carry out the payroll for my dad's business. I dont work for the business but feel I could accomodate in my spare time.
The payroll only has around 10 employees. They still manually calculate the payroll and I would like to know if anyone can recommend cheap software other than Sage or quicker methods to calculate payroll ?

Don't know about cheap software, but if it is only for 10 employees, maybe you could set it up in excel as a workbook with a sheet per employee and a summary sheet linked to each employee for totals.0 -

Hi
I know Quickbooks do a cheaper payroll package than Sage, although you still pay extra for the annual updates. I think VT have a program for payroll not sure on price.
I have a client who uses Quickbooks for accounts and payroll he seems to get on ok with that and I have not had a problem when producing his year end accounts.
I can't comment on using excel for payroll, I usually use Sage.

Re:Payroll
If you want free software you could always use the Inland Revenue Employers CD ROM, make sure you use the Budget Edition and you will have to remember to reorder each year as it won't be sent automatically. This is available from their online order form and can be sent to anyone, you don't have to be an employer.
I use it for one client who wasnt prepared to pay for software. (it does take longer, but he's paying me an hourly rate, so that's his choice!) I have tested the CD with doing the payroll manually and I ended up with the same figures. The CD has an additional facility this year, which is a database. I haven't tried setting that up yet, so I'm not sure how helpful it is.
I also don't know yet whether you can do the end of year filing from here, or whether you would need to use the Inland Revenue website, which I have also used and again will take longer than being able to process automatically, but once you've set it up the first year, it should be easier for future years. I was also able to run the P60's from the online filing last year, so that saved having to produce them manually.

Re:Payroll
Hi
The link to the online order form is:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/emp-form.htm
I have just had a look and can't see the CD for 2005/2006 anymore.
The pre budget CD for 2006/2007 is now available.
Were you planning on using the CD straight away or in the new Tax Year?
If you are an employer you should have been sent the CD automatically.
It might be worth ringing the Inland Revenue to see if they have any CD's left.
I don't know if it's possible to email the information from the CD, but I can have a go at emailing it to you if you like? It's a folder so you'll either need to have windows XP or winzip to be able to read it.
