Members of some professional bodies including ATT are able to seek advice direct from Counsel or may instruct Counsel in non-court litigation (DPA).
I wonder what the AAT membership think about having the same professional access, or do we already have this?

Very unlikely to be required I would think.

I'm sure there would be very few AAT members who would want to instruct counsel without a solicitor or barristers involvement. I am also an ATT member and would never consider using that ability.

Some CTAs and tax specialist chartereds may wish to but that is their prerogative!

May be not Dean (And hopefully not) yet your answer is "It is their prerogative"
I agree with you that most if the need arised would probably go through solicitors for expediency yet having the prerogative wouldnot take anything away from AAT members' professional credibility, would it?

No, but I suspect there are significant costs in obtaining and maintaining that ability which would have no benefit to the vast majority of the membership.

Just as there is cost & benefit with all things there will be one here.
Whether it will benefit the membership is open to comments.
I myself am neutral on the subject for I am not converted one way or the other yet.
