I did a journal last week and I started off with a credit entry coming out of a dept payroll cost centre which was an incorrect posting and I debited the entry to the correct dept payroll cost centre.
I was then told by a colleague that Journals should always start with the Debit entry first. Is this right?

Yes, its standard practice to enter the Debit before the Credit when creating a journal.0
