Confusing knowing the difference between when to use the words 'mist' and 'midst' isn't it?
Why, only last week, I went to my local church hall to see what I thought was the movie "Gorillas In The Mist" and rather than witnessing the Sigourney Weaver environmetalist delight, discovered instead that there were loads of the real life furry buggers, hanging from all over the shop, causing a hell of a racket and interfering with the gathering.
Good job I took my ivory handled hunting blade and bagged myself a few.0 -

It doesn't matter about your spelling - accounting is about maths (mostly)! So we won't shoot you yet!
Bookkeeping is about the numbers, accounting is often about the presentation and interpretation of those numbers for use by non-accountants and other professionals.
So since a large amount of this will be through data in written form, spelling is quite important since you can't have the data user overly thinking - for example - about the usage of "their" when it should have been "they're".0 -

Yep, I agree Blobby; but having worked in a secretarial capacity in an accountacy practice I'm also aware that significant things are normally reviewed by more than one person to ensure mistakes don't occur. I've spent many an hour typing and 'calling' accounts with other staff in the office! The secretaries corrected the spelling mistakes, the accounting bods did the numbers.
Also as the owner of a dyslexic son and husband, I'm constantly reminded "well you could read what it says so what does it matter if it's spelt wrong". (Blob, please excuse my grammar here, this is a direct quote!)
I also think we have lost a keen grasp of the spoken and written word as there is so much slang created by text/email/blogs, etc. Anyway, I could continue on this topic quite happily; perhaps pontificating on the merits of using me and I in the correct place in a sentence for instance - another aspect of sentence structure that seems to have been permanently mislaid. Or the number of people who are always 'sat' in the past tense, never 'sitting' in the present!FMAAT - AAT Licensed Member in Practice - Pewsey, Wiltshire0 -

I find the spoken word the tricky one. When in management meetings you have to think quickly with explainations and arguments (ie excuses).
Being a good accountant is one thing but I really beleive people gifted at bafling people with bullsh1t get furher!0 -

Yup, especially sales people. By the time the accountants have unravelled half of this bullshit, the person's already legged it to go and spin it somewhere else.
Which is why I've ordered a new sniper rifle from E-Bay...0 -
