Have finally made a decision and have ordered a correspondence course for paper 3 from Tolleys.
Will send for a second one in a month or two but can't decide between VAT and Business Compliance. Am hoping to sit both exams in May and then do papers 1 and 7 afterwards.0 -
If you are doing paper 3 in May. You cannot do papers 4,5 or 6 at the same sitting. They are held at the same time.
The usual ATT timetable is
Tuesday
AM Paper 1
PM Paper 2
Wednesday
AM Paper 3,4,5 or 6
PM Paper 70 -

I forgot about that, thanks for pointing that out. Thats a bummer, got to be 1 or 7 then, anybody any opinions which would be bext paired together?0 -
I would say 1, like AAT there's probably some overlap between personal and business tax.
I'm doing 3 and 7 in May 2011 just because of the way the course is structured, then if I fail one I can resit in November 2011 with paper 10 -
Must admit that was my first thought but had thought of 1 and 7 as one siting cos someone had recommended doing them together in this thread.
Am not doing paper 2 cos I've done business tax in AAT so 1 sounds the logical answer, just wondered they are the 2 hardest. A course for paper 7 is cheaper than all the others so I presumed it was the easiest as in less content. I'm sure someone will correct me lol0 -
I would recommend doing unit 1 just because thats what i did doing 1 and 3 together. I found there to be a good amount of overlap, i cant remember exactly how much but i remember being able to skip a large part of one of the unit 3 folders because it was all covered in unit 1. I think when you get your tolleys binders in the "other taxes" binder it tells you all units which are covered in unit 1 so this will show you exactly how much overlap there is.
You would think unit 1 would be harder than unit 7 however so far (having not yet finished unit 7) ive found unit 1 easier because ive always found working with numbers much easier.
There is overlap between units 1 and 7 which is why doing them this way is often recommended, as far as ive found its the filing dates of returns etc that is covered in both0 -
Jilt, I have just sent my application away. I have applied for 1&7 sitting for the exams in May 2011. I just hope i will cope.0

Well guys... thanks to this thread I have decided to pick up my studies again and will be sitting at least one exam in May!
So, I have to do papers 1 and 7 (Personal tax and Ethics) plus one other....
I am torn between paper 3 (Higher business tax, more useful, harder) and paper 5 (VAT, useful, possibly easier).
And I'm stuck as to what to study for May. Do I go for 2 exams or just one?
I'm having a look through the past papers. I need to get my head round the fact that I'm going to have to learn and revise stuff that I'll never need to know in the real world!0 -

Well done you! You're always so busy it'll be hard finding time to fit everything in, but you'll do it anyway!FMAAT - AAT Licensed Member in Practice - Pewsey, Wiltshire0 -

Thanks Annie, don't I know it! I hope you're right.....!!!!!! I'm going with the "I'm already having panic attacks, I may as well justify them" theory.... LOL!

Wouldn't paper 3 be easier to you seeing as you're already in practice?
I was hoping to go for 2 exams in May, am going to start paper 3 first and if it seems ok will send for a second course after a couple of months. I'd have thought you'd be okay with 2 exams with you experience.
Happy learning!0 -

I dunno, I reckon papers 3 and 5 are both things I already know in part. I'm really torn between choosing the easier paper and the more useful one.
[re-reads past papers]
A lot of the stuff in paper 3 goes right over my head as it's stuff I will never need (e.g. the group and consortium stuff, farmers averaging, other specific niche areas, we don't offer and don't plan to offer services in these areas) and it's stuff that totally bakes my noodle.
Acutally the more I read about what's in paper 3, the more I think consolidating my VAT knowledge will be far more beneficial, and far more relevant to what I do.
I'm a bit worried about doing more than one exam at once, paper 2 was really hard work, doing 2 in a day or in a week will be quite a challenge. AAT exams, I was done in half the time. ATT, I was writing right up to the bell.
Good luck!0 -

Hmmmmm, I'll bear what you've said in mind about 2 papers.
Farmer's averaging eh, well seeing as our office is in the peak district and I'm now getting local clients, even though I have no farmer clients as yet that could be very useful added to the info burg gave me.
I'd say do whatever is more beneficial to you. Keep me informed. If I do end up doing a second paper in May I think it may well be paper 1.0 -

I'm probably asking too much of myself to do further study with things how they are at the moment, so I think I might be sensible and stick to one paper. Bear in mind I've been out of the habit of studying for.... over 4 years now (I winged the BTAP exam) as well, so you are likely fine to do 2 exms at one sitting.
The farmer thing is useful if you decide to do it - it is a specialism. My business other half does a few farmers so I don't see the point in letting our skillset overlap (my VAT is already better than his). We work in rural Wiltshire so there is an argument for doing farm accounts, but he can do it not me!
I think paper 1 will be the hardest for me actually, need to learn how to calc WTC and CTC, revise and learn capital gains again....
Actually the thing that bakes my noodle the most is the compliance stuff - when deadlines are, how much penalties are, etc. I can't seem to keep all of that in my head and there is a lot of it in the past papers. At work I just look it up on tinternet every time!!0 -
Thanks Jill.

Well why didn't you say that before, VAT for you girl!0 -
Sorry, to join in late guys.
My original plan was to also do ATT as I felt it would add so much more to my clients than any of the chartered qualifications. I started full time with my practice last may and was planning to look at starting in the September but, I gained so many new clients I just haven't had the time.
Maybe like others it will be something that I get around to but at the moment for me it's about getting my practice running smoothly. So hopefully will get there in the next few years!Regards,

Ian, I know what you mean! I have so much on my plate at the moment....
The other thing that's made me get my butt in gear was a talk with my business partner the other day. We had 2 hours training on our new Digita software and afterwards David remarked, "That was hard work" and we agreed that concentrating on learning new things is hard.
David's 9 years older than I am and he said "There's a big gap between 30 and 40 in terms of enegry and concentration."
I realised that if I didn't do it now, I probably never would do it. With luck in a few years I'm going to have kids and then I really won't have time. I'm far too busy, my health isn't great but sod it, I'm going to try and do it anyway.....!0 -
I see what you are saying and I do think sometimes 'Will there ever be a right time to do it?'.
Time's a little more on my side as I'm a fair way off 30 yet. That could be a good plan though to get it done by the time I'm 30.Regards,

can someone please post a link where you can get all the info for the exams ect0

"There's a big gap between 30 and 40 in terms of enegry and concentration." QUOTE]
I have to say that don't think there is a big gap between 30 and 40 in terms of concentration - energy maybe (and waking up with aches and pains in the morning - but then at 41 I've got one new hip and arthritis in the other owing to 'wrong shaped' femurs).
BUT I don't think my concentration has gone!!!!!
