Im going to Egypt next week (1st time) and i've already changed my money into Egyptian Pounds. However i've heard there may be a limit on how much you can take into the country? Some websites say 1000 egyptian pounds (really hope not as i have £4000) and others say 10,000 egyptian pounds?
Does anyone know what the limit is or if there is one?
Thanks

I've just looked on a site and it does say the limit is 10000 Epytian pounds, but you can take as much foriegn currency as you like! It also said nobody checks at the airport!!!
When I first started working in a bank, back in the 70's we used to mark in your passport how much foreign currency you were taking, haven't done that for years - so how is anyone going to know?
Other than A-Vic's suggestion, you may have to change some back again and take in sterling :-(. The same site did say the exchange rate is better over there - they want western currency - so you may not have lost out too much.0 -
Soooo glad its 10,000. Thanks Jan.
Was unsure which currency to take as some sights say EGP, some GBP and others USD! Alls i have is 4000 EGP and enough sterling for my Visa0 -
Sooo sorry that was a typo - should read 1000.
Found the site again try http://www.ask-aladdin.com/faq/Travel-advice.htm

ah crud!
I got it from Thomas Cook travel Agents.
They should have told me!0 -
I went to Egypt last year and I was also worried at the small amount allegedly allowed. I took over 5,000 ( split in to thousands and packed separately). Nobody or even seemed interested, however it easy to change sterling anywhere for no commission and at rates that at worst are as good as here. There is plenty of black market exchanging going on but it is ilegal and I wouldn't risk it Its also cheaper to but your visa in the airport on arrival.
Have a great time it's a fantastic country -
P.S. its worth memorising the Arabic for no thank you "la shokran"0 -
Just phoned Thomas Cook and they said 5000 EGP is the limit. phew!0
