    Hello all

Have recently gained Member in Practice registration and would like a mentor; I emailed the members in practice team thinking they would be able to put me in touch with one (sure I read it somewhere, not being lazy) but they told me to try the forum. I am based in Basingstoke. Is this the right thread or should I start a separate one?

Thanks in advance for any offers/advice/points in the right direction.

    Hi Mac and welcome :)

Because I'm lazy, I usually just volunteer myself, but I seem to be mentoring quite a few people at the moment, and I guess I'm arguably being selfish too, haha, so can any other kind experienced folks help out please?

I could help mentor if you are still looking! I'm not covered for CGT, so you'd need to ask on here if you get stuck in that area. I'm also not based anywhere near Basingstoke, so would be purely online help, but I mentor another in this way and it seems to work fine!

    Thanks Ade :D

I have no idea where my mentees are, I do it all online/ phone based.

I'm not hot on CGT either - mostly mentoring revolves round accounts production, income/corporation tax, practice management and dealing with various issues and oddities. It's all good- and very rewarding - thank you!

    Hi there,

I'm in the same situation as Mac1 just gained my MIP registration and emailed the MIP team who told me that they couldn't put me in touch with anyone. Would anyone be willing to mentor me please? I live in Essex (Holland on Sea).

    Many Thanks,
    Chantelle

That's really odd. I was sure they had a list.

I'm full up at the moment but I hope you find someone.

    Mentor Please

    Hi All

I am applying to be a Mip after being made redundant quite recently -

I have been an accountant in service industry for over 4 yrs but have no practice experience. I want to be realistic and start off with a few sole traders until I get myself up to speed. I have been doing lots of CPD quite recently to get my self ready.

I was hoping to find a mentor to give me some guidance/advice any help would be most appreciated

    Thanks

If you PM me your email address, I can help you out!
I also came from Industry straight into MIP, with no actual practice experience, so know where you are coming from - it was a shock to the system initially, however you can soon settle in to it and get going. Plenty of people on here who give great advice!

I have just received my acceptance notification to the MIP scheme. I have been licensed to carry out most of the services I offer but need a mentor to be able to offer taxation services. I am based in Radstock/Bath area and wondered if there are any members in this area that can help me??

I've been in practice for 2 years now, and a MIP for 6 months.

I marketed myself as a bookkeeper to begin with and have 1-2 new referrals per week, which is about as much as I can deal with. Whilst there is a lot of data entry I am also taking on more and more accountancy work for small businesses, for which I'm qualified and confident to take on. I don't work with large companies or any with complicated structures.

I'd like to focus on more lucrative clients, so need to advertise myself as a "qualified" accountant and mention AAT on my website, but am also aware that there is far more competition on the web for accountants than for bookkeepers.

I also like working with very small, chaotic, microbusiness should I use language like small business expert/specialist to give my advertising more weight in these areas?

Either email the AAT MIP team or ask on here!

NB: mentors can be anywhere, they don't have to be local to you unless you want them to be.

Hi I have been a MIP for a year now. I feel it would be really useful for me to have a mentor and wish I had one from the very beginning. I worked in practice for 10 years previous to starting my own accountancy business and had always felt wholly confident in my abilities but now I work by myself that is quickly changing. It can at times feel really scary. It would be great to have someone there to whom I could send an email just to for reassurance purposes. If there is anyone who would be prepared to be my mentor please PM me. Thank you.

I am hoping that someone will give me some guidance please. I have gained my AAT level 4 a few weeks ago. However I am struggling to gain experience. I am doing some book keeping for a friend of mine. He has an accountant to do P&L accounts. With my book keeping I have done a P&L and it is not the same as the accountants P&L. I use a simple spreadsheet. I would like to be able to do this and be confident that my work is accurate. But not sure where to start. I have asked help from my tutors and I understood their advice however wasnโ€™t sure how to put in to practice. I know this is a big ask. Personally this is a very difficult post to add to the forum as I feel some people may feel I am not worth the qualification I gained. Would someone be my mentor please :blushing:

    Thank you

All that hard work you've done? You are worth it :) Be proud of yourself!

I can't really explain how, but that the accountant's P&L is different from yours is normal. Different accountants have different styles, might make different adjustments etc.

Bookkeeping is a science; accounting is an art. That's the easiest way to explain it.

I can't take on anyone else at the moment but I am sure someone will come along to help you out :)

    Hi everyone!!
I'm looking at providing some basic bookkeeping and VAT services on a voluntary basis.
As this is my first step towards becoming a member in practice I feel like it would be extremely beneficial if I had someone to turn to for general advice and a bit of reassurance.

I am based in Leicester but don't mind being mentored by email or phone.
If there is anyone out there who is willing to help please get in touch.
    Thank you

    Good morning everybody,

I was wondering if anyone had a spare mentoring slot available? I was hoping that I could also have my business continuity covered with you also? I am in the process of obtaining my MIP license's and would find it really great to have some support if any of you have the time to offer this. My background is industry rather than practice, and having read through AAT's guidelines and regulations I feel comfortable with most of the services I am allowed to offer, but I do feel some areas may take me out of my initial comfort zone.

Location is not important as I am happy to communicate over internet/phone but it would be nice to meet face to face to see and discuss things if possible. I am based in Derby.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mentor in New Forest area

Hi, I am a new mip in the new forest area and would love a mentor if anyone has availability to help. Im happy to travel to see you or of course just communicate re email or skype whichever is easiest for you. I'm currently studying towards my ATT exams as well and would love to work towards my chartered tax exams.. but work load slowing that down a bit. I am fairly confident in most areas. ..and although i have completed ct600 for examples when working for others, doing this now makes me all panicky...silly i know. Would really really appreciate a mentor if you feel you could sqeeze me in. Many thanks
