Does any one know if there is a web site where you can find out if a company have a VAT number from the company name?

No there isn't. Sometimes companies show their VAT number somewhere on their website, but they don't have to. Easiest way is just to ask the company, or get a VAT receipt/invoice from them.

There is a website for checking that a VAT number is valid http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/vieshome.do?selectedLanguage=EN, but obviously you need to know the number first.

You could try using the search engine on Google, sometimes works for me.
