If I self-study, where can I find out about course requirements

Hello,
I'm looking to do the level 2 Bookkeeping Certificate as well as the level 2 Computerized Accounting Certificate.
I've read quite a few threads here about self-studying instead of going with a training provider and it seems that this might suit me better.
My question is, if I decide to go the self study route, where do I find out about the requirements for these courses? Is it a simple case of ordering the textbooks and signing up as an external student with a provider for the exams, or do I need a provider for some of the modules? Some of the threads mention projects that need to be done through official training providers. Where can I find out more information on these?
