Hi

Does anybody know how I can get hold of study texts for ATT?

Called Kaplan and they said they only sell courses and not the texts. They also said they buy them from Tolly's. Looked on Tolly's website and they appear to only sell the courses yet they have tax books that appear to be for the general public rather than study.

Can anybody please advise as the process seems far harder than it was for studying AAT.

Thanks

    Hi @AMS_Accountants

I studied ATT through Tolleys and you can buy the revision material +study plan from about ยฃ200 +Vat (one paper) . I don't think you can buy just the study material but you could call/ email them and ask.
The course (study material + practice questions + practice exams papers and access to tutors) prepares you well and I don't think I would have passed all the papers without a structured study plan. But maybe it's just me.
I don't think you will find second hand study material as Tolleys have the copyright and do not allow you to sell it on.

The ATT website publish the syllabus of what is examinable for the papers so if you really want to go it alone you may be fine. You will also need to purchase the legislation from either Tolleys or CCH.

    I hope this helps.

Is this on top of the ยฃ200 + VAT per paper?

They cost ยฃ90 (7 books) and they cover the latest finance act. so really they last for 2 exam sittings (may and November).
If you passed business tax with AAT you are exempted from paper 2.

For the ATT qualification you need to sit 3 papers
    Paper 1 personal tax
    Paper 2 accounting principles
and a paper of your choice amongst Business Compliance, VAT or CT.

you also need to sit 2 computer based assessments Ethics and Law (material to be bought directly from the ATT).

If you have an exemption for paper 2 you can easily sit one paper in May and one in November with the same finance Act. So if you wanted to start now you could get the CBA out of the way (6 weeks intensive revisions for each) and then sit one paper in May 2017 and one in November 2017.

Or if you are very keen you could sit 2 papers in November 2016 and then the CBAs. Depends how much time you have between now and November to study.

So as well as paying ยฃ240 per exam paper for study materials, you have to spend ยฃ90 for the legislation that lasts one financial year? So If I chose to sit one exam per year, it would cost me ยฃ240 + ยฃ90 per exam?

    Hi AMS
Having finished AAT I have moved on to self study ATT and you can purchase just the study manuals from Tolley without having to enrol on a course.
I have just bought the study material for Business Tax which was expensive at ยฃ100 but was still the cheapest option I could find, you then need to enrol as a student with ATT before being able to sit the exam.
    Hope this helps

    Hi MarieNoelle
Even though I have passed Business Tax with AAT I could not qualify for an exemption because you have to be a full member and I am only an affiliate member.

Can you purchase the books through their site or do you have to call up?

The earliest exam I could do would be November as I have not registered yet so would it be worth waiting until May to sit the first exam so I can get the 3 papers completed between May and November, only having to purchase the legislation once?

Then again, I assume the legislation is something you would purchase every year even after qualification because you would be giving clients advice from these books? Does the legislation have working examples inside them or just facts?

    Thanks

For the day to day work you probably wouldn't need to buy new leg every year as it is easily accessible on line. Once you get used to how it is organised and where to look you will have the updated version from CCH on line (which you get with AAT MIP scheme).

    Hi AMS
I purchased the study material using the following email address
    examtraining@lexisnexis.co.uk
Explain what you want to purchase and they should get back to you with the details of how to proceed
Get ready for a bit of a shock though as I thought the material would be just 1 manual per paper like the AAT but for Business Tax I received 6 thick folders which go into a lot more detail than the Business Tax module with AAT
Hope this helps and good luck

    Hi
The law exam and the ethics exam are both computer based examinations.
If you visit the ATT website they have mock exams that you can take.
    Hope that helps

The 2 exams are Computer Based Assessments (multiple choice questions) lasting 60 minutes - there are practice assessments on the ATT or CIOT website.

Both books are A4 size and over 400 pages long
Don't want to put you off but the Law book was probably the most boring book I have ever had to read
    Good Luck

I like taxes. I studied taxes in Spain, and it is the only think i can do apart of work. My interest in taxes made that my exemployer to get ride of lots of illegal inmigrants, to pay a fine to Island Revenue and to star given us hours like crazy. No bad.

Hi Talavera6, what exams are you planning on doing?

How many ATT exams have you done so far?

I've got the law book (not ethics) so I can let you know how long the law book is later on when I find it.

Apparently it takes most people 2 attempts to pass the law and ethics exams. But at least we don't have to wait 6 months to have the second attempt.

I want to do the law. I have done no exams. It is hard working full time. I record part of the book to lisent it in the morning. The rest I study with a system similar to the snake and ladders game. It always works. Like I live sharing a studio flat is even more difficult, because of the recordings and the time to study, but. I am trying.
