AAT Cert in Bookkeeping and sticking it to the man

Let me explain...my line manager who is the Finance head mostly likely won't agree to me trying to get it funded via work.
They admitted it would be helpful if someone was AAT Bookkeeping trained so it got me thinking - perhaps I can do it on my own, get qualified and then turn around and bask in that smug feeling.
Question is - my current role isn't finance based and I assume that work experience would be necessary so that my training would stick in my memory.
Can anyone here who has done AAT Bookkeeping give me advice/support/encouragement?
