Corporation tax payment / tax return deadlines

Could anybody tell my why the Corporation tax payment is due three months before the tax return deadline?

The accounts need to be filed to companies house 9 months after the year end (generally) and so does the tax need to be paid. Best off using this as the deadline as opposed to the 12 months after year end for the tax return.Regards,

The accounts have been filed with Companies House and the Corporation tax paid (both by 9 month deadline). Just wondering why submitting the Company tax return is 3 mknths after those deadlines.0
