Deemed dividend due to write off DLA

Hi
I have a client who is writing off their DLA, he doesn't have any distributable reserves but I have been told he can write it off as a deemed dividend, therefore not appearing in the accounts as a dividend? IS this correct, I can't find anything to corroborate this. Also what would the accounting entries be?
