Hi,
Anyone out there doing ATT personal and business tax exams in November. Fancy being study buddies? I could really do with someone to bounce off.
Have just finished last of AAT exams so its going to be a lot of work to get through in the time.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Is there a lot extra involved in ATT than the personal and business tax at AAT?0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi I have just started ATT.
I am not taking exams til May 07 as I enrolled too late to take them in November. But I would still like a study buddy as I have started both the Personal Tax and Business Tax options.
My email is crisp_michelle@hotmail.com
Butterfly31044 - the work is similar to the AAT modules but they are more in depth. Under the new syllabus you also get the opportunity to study a tax area in a lot more detail.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi,
Quite a few more fiddly bits to learn and quite a tight time schedule. But basically straight forward.
If you are registered as a student of any accounting or tax body, Lexis Nexis Butterworths give you a massive discount on all their tax books.
You will need Tolleys orange & yellow tax handbooks(you take them in to the exam with you). Don't be put off when they come through the post - they weigh a lot but you don't need to read all of it. Just look up any sections to which the BPP course books refer you. I looked at both Lexis Nexis & BPP before choosing BPP for my distance learning. Lexis Nexis was so full of mistakes you could hardly read it - just as well they don't use the same guy to write their tax manuals!0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hiya, I was thinking about doing ATT. Just sat both the tax papers and really enjoyed the course. Could you tell me if the ATT is much more difficult and in much more depth? Any info would be great. May I ask if you are doing it for your job or self employment. It wouldn't be for my emplyoment, but thought it may be very useful if I was to work for myself. Thanks.0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I work for myself as well, and thought the course would be useful as I deal with a lot of tax work and this is an area I want to specialise in.
It is more in depth than AAT, but if you have completed the tax modules under AAT then you have a basic idea and you would be building on your current knowledge.
As ATT are changing their syllabus and the way they structure the course, you may be best to look at their website: www.att.org.uk to see if it is of any use to you.0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Normally people take either ATT or Chartered Accountant route prior to studying for CTA so it's reasonable to assume ATT is Chartered Acc't (tax)level.
I have covered about 60% of the Personal Tax syllabus so far and would say that it is all fairly straight forward. Exams look fairly trick free (except for the ton of reference books you take in with you). ATT publish the last 2 years' exams on their website so you could have a look.
If you want to be a sole pratitioner or Tax specialist AAT followed by ATT is becoming a popular route, although the AAT PTC/BTC syllabii cover most things you'll probably encounter as a sole practitioner.
For me the hardest thing about the ATT is there is quite a bit to learn in quite a short space of time..If interested I recommend you ring BPP and ask about when their books are published in relation to the exam dates.
Exam sittings are May & November and there is a pre-exam deadline for registering with the ATT.
Registering as a student cost me รยฃ100 but membership lasts for 3 years. After November you can sit the two tax exams in two separate sittings (much better!). There are 7 exams (not so good!) in the new modular syllabus starting in May but you can get certificates of competence for each module.
I hope I don't fail or I'll have all 7 exams to sit.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
To Qualify under the new syllabus you only have to have 4 certificates of competancy not 7 I have a copy of the new syllabus and guidelines.
They must include: personal tax, business tax & accounting principles, practice admin & ethics and one from a choice of business tax higher skills,IHT, VAT or business compliance.
Law and accounting are no longer covered as seperate subjects but are covered within each paper.
On top you must have 2 years relevant experience to apply for membership and use the letters ATT.
I contacted ATT and if you enrol now you can only start on the new syllabus.
Also the length of membership increased in Jan 06 from 3 to 5 years costing รยฃ100 and is still transferable to CIOT to take the CTA exams.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Well thats better. Hopefully I'll get through on the old syllabus while I can still use my accounting & law exemptions but if not then 4 exams better than 7!
Cheers Krispi0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Yes it is better, I nearly had a heart attack when you said 7 exams!!
Have a look at the new syllabus it's available to download on the ATT website, if you don't pass under the old one you might still be able to transfer exams passed to the new one. Would be better for you because you still might not have to sit 4 exams under the new syllabus.
My dilemma is which specialist module to take, all are relevant to the work I do now, it's just deciding which would be the most useful.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
What do you do now?
In 10 years I've never had to do more than scratch the surface of Inheritance Tax and I've never touched trusts. I understand from recent articles in the press that trusts are under attack from Gordon Brown but believe there are still some circumstances where they could prove very useful. Ibviously IHT would also be good for tax planning as client base matures but if clients are all fairly young maybe you could do this module later. When do you have to decide? I'll be having a look sometime over the next 2 or 3 weeks at IHT & Trusts. I could let you know or ring me & I'll talk you through what I can see.
Might be better to do what you like best to get the qualification and then do other modules later.0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I am wanting to start ATT providing I pass the AAT in august. I will have to do it by home study and was wondering if anyone can recommend a course. I did AAT at the local college and found the lectures brilliant but am not sure how I"ll be at going it alone. I did do the OU a few years ago but again I had weekly lectures.
Any advise willing received!

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I am doing my course either through Tolleys or BPP. I have heard good and bad about both providers. For example Tolleys books contain a lot of mistakes and BPP are slow to respond to queries.
Whoever I go with I will do a revision course through BPP prior to sitting the exam. I have found these courses excellent in the past and you get the chance to attempt lots of practice questions and get feedback there and then. So not only are you going into the exam armed with the knowledge of the subject area but also with a better idea of how the examiner expects each question to be answered.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi Bobby,
I'm doing BPP home study, but haven't signed up to their course yet (I just bought the books). I chose BPP because I decided that BPP seemed to have less "errata" than Tolleys. Everyone works differently but what I do is count up the chapters and allocate them to each week. Mostly I have to get through at least 2 chapters per week together with the quiz & practice questions for each chapter. Some chapters are much bigger (like the chapter on employee benefits) so I only do 1 chapter that week. It's quite a lot but if you stick to the plan you'll keep on track.
Just make sure you don't get too hung up if you can't figure out where they got their answer from - there may be a mistake in their question.
If you find a college course anywhere near Merseyside let me know - you're right, college is much easier!0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I am considering doing my ATT qualification once I complete my AAT's in December. Does anyone know if there are any exemptions for MAAT's in the new syllabus of ATT? :?:0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I'm afraid you don't get any exemptions under the new syllabus
I asked when I joined as a student member and was told you couldn't claim any because accounting & law were now intergrated with each of the tax modules instead of being examined as separate subjects.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Michelle are you studying for the ATT now?
I'm sending off the forms this week all being well

All new syllabus starts in May with completely new exam structure. Suggest you phone ATT on 020 7235 2544.
Good luck.0 -

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi Dean
Sorry, I was replying to the earlier question.
I am studying ATT at the moment, aiming for November. Under the old syllabus, there's a lot to learn in a short space of time. However, under new syllabus the tax exams can be sat at different sittings. I think this should improve things significantly.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi Dean
Yes I have started to study and hope to take personal tax and business tax in May 07 and professional ethics and another tax module (yet to decide which) in November 07.
The biggest problem I have had is getting hold of the new syllabus text books :x
Tolleys say the yellow & Orange handbooks are not available until the end of September and I sent off for their tax guide which they were supposed to send 2 weeks ago still hasn't arrived - I am not impressed by their level of service
I am hoping to study through BPP but their syllabus books are not available to buy yet either, so at the moment I am looking at the law book which I got directly from ATT - a very good book & essential as it covers everything for the exams. I am also following the syllabus provided by ATT and reading around some of the tax stuff.
It's going well at the moment but there is a lot to learn
Regards
Michelle

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi
Good luck to everyone sitting planning to study ATT - from my experience it is a valuable qualification to have. I have just received my ATT letters, and am awaiting my MAAT.
Since I started the course, more opportunities have come up for me. I get involved in a lot more tax work now, have received a really good pay rise and gained an ACA training contract with my employer. I am also exempt from the Professional Stage Tax paper of the ICAEW.
The course is quite demanding, but it is definitely worth the time and effort.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi
I am thinking of doing ATT but was told that London was the nearest examination centre to take the exams!!
As I live in Norfolk I find this very off putting
Unless anyone knows any different?
Thanks
Sharon0 -
Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Thanks Michelle, we'll get through it
Shaxxa, I live 200 miles away from London and my nearest exam centre is 25miles away from me
I would suggest you contract the ATT direct.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Hi Dean
I did, but have to say that the girl on the phone did sound unsure!!
I think the exam centres are Birmingham, Leeds, London, Southampton and somewhere else that escapes me for now.
Maybe I'll ring them again :?

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
Here's a link to the ATT exam application form. It shows the exam centres on the second page:
http://www.att.org.uk/attach.pl/66/440/49917%20ATT%20Application%20To%20Sit.pdf
It doesn't mention Southamption, although I think I got a letter from the ATT a couple of months back stating that there was going to be an exam centre there.

Re:Study Buddy for ATT
I've just checked my prospectus and the exam centres are listed as Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Newport, Reading, London, Exeter and Southampton.
As I'm in Coventry I'll be taking mine at Birmingham.
I'd contact ATT again just to be sure.
