Re:HMRC Website
Help desk came back to me today.
Apparently, anyone who is already a 'user' has to log-on on a different page - so if we have them 'bookmarked', we have to change the address.
It would be too easy to have a message come up to that effect - rather than a 15 digit code that had to be emailed to them!
It could be worse - I could be starting work on Tuesday at the HMRC website support centre.

Re:HMRC Website
Guess what - their site is going to be down this weekend for routine maintenance - and the end of the financial year is? er tomorrow.
He he he though I have done all but one of my PAYE year end returns, and actually all went through really smoothly and easily - so at least it is improving year on year.

Re:HMRC Website
Looks like the PAYE section of the website is already down.
Typical I've got someone coming to work for me today who was going to do all my end of year filing. They always seem to do this at the most critical time!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I really believe they take a sadistic pleasure from our stress.
I finished my payroll yesterday, but can't do anything with it...
It would have been so nice to finish tonight with it all filed.
Hey ho!
:roll:0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Didn't they do exactly the same thing last year? I guess they do need to make updates for the new financial year, but they could advertise the fact they are taking the website down a bit better!
I wonder if the update is going to mean the CIS section will be working once it goes live again, supposedly at 6.00 tomorrow morning, don't think I'll get up at 6 tomorrow to find out, but I will try registering at some point tomorrow!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I'm not looking at any of it until next Tuesday.
I really don't want to spend the holiday worrying about something which might change by then.
I spoke to a couple of our subcontractors yesterday who should have given me an invoice, but didn't.
They won't be paid again until the new year, so will have 20% deducted.
They didn't know!!!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Unfortunately April's a really busy month for me, so I don't have any choice, I'm going to have to do some work over the weekend, plus being Self Employed if I take the Bank Holiday off I don't get paid. Added to that the fact I had arranged for someone to do my end of year filing today, to give myself some more time, now it looks like I'll have to do it myself!!
Looks like there's going to be a few upset subbies then!! I still don't think they really understand, one said to me earlier this week, that to make it easier in future why don't I not deduct his tax and he'll pay it all at the end of the year!!!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Oh dear! Don't you just love subbies?
Apart from the ones that I pay weekly, I won't need to worry too much until the end of April.
Hopefully it will all have calmed down by then.
I would think that 95% of mine are on my verified list, so that's not so bad.
Did they increase the tax to 20% to cover their extra wages bill for having to work over the Easter holiday?!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
You're very optimistic if you think it will have calmed down as soon as that!!
According to HMRC website the new CIS will reduce the Administration required, (can't remember their exact wording and the website is down at the moment)it's certainly not reducing my admin, so it must be reducing theirs!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Well, I've updated the subby profiles for those that are cleared and ready for take-off.
Hopefully it will all go smoothly, but I can't help feeling that we're in for a bumpy ride.

Re:HMRC Website
How good is your knowledge of CIS?
One of my clients has a Construction Company and another company within the same group, as part of the other business they let out properties which is all done through an agent. The agent arranges for any works to be done on the properties for a Management Fee they then deduct the cost of repair work from the rental income before transferring the balance to my client.
According to the person I spoke to on the HMRC helpdesk, this would fall within CIS, so therefore either the letting agent would need to be registered for CIS or they wouldnt be able to arrange for any work to be undertaken without my client getting the subby verified and my client would need to pay the subby direct and deal with the CIS issue meaning they will be doing half the work they are paying the letting agent for!
What I'm not sure of at this stage is whether the person on the HMRC website didn't really understand what I was asking!!!!!

Re:HMRC Website
I think they might fall into the scope of CIS.
But having said that, if I employ a plumber to repair a toilet in our offices, I don't include him - and that has been verified at a recent inspection.
One thing I do know is that inspectors often give a view rather than a definitive answer.
I had a query with a recent subby and actually contacted the inspector that dealt with their case. He told me that he fully expected his decision to be overturned by a subsequent inspector.
He thought it was amusing.
Edit: Just looked at the new CIS guide. Didn't find the answer, because I was side-tracked by the calculations in their examples. The rate of tax shown was 18%.
Words fail me.

Re:HMRC Website
I guess I need to try and get something in writing from the Inland Revenue, at least then even if the advice they give is wrong, we've got something to prove we did all we could to act correctly!!
I think there must be more than one version of the quide, the one I'm looking at, CIS340, is showing the calculations as 20% and 30%.
I wonder what would happen if we made the same error as you found and only deducted 18%!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Looks like the CIS online is running, but both Inland Revenue courses I went on said you would be able to file for a Contractor without the authorisation being in place first, the same as you can for filing end of year payrolls, from what I've looked at so far that doesn't seem to be the case!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
WOW!
Just logged on and it worked.
Must have helped, keeping my fingers crossed all weekend!

Re:HMRC Website
You might have been able to log on, but I tried ringing up and they are only offering a limited service because their computer system is down!!!
I had hoped to verify someone online, but of course I need to wait 5 days for the activation pin so I tried ringing up and was told they were unable to verify anyone today, they told me to try again tomorrow, when I said I only worked one day a week, so wouldn't be able to try again until next Tuesday they said that would be fine!!!!

Re:HMRC Website
Deep breaths, Sue. Deep breaths.
We will get through this!
I only have to pay 3 subcontractors this week and they're already verified. Next week is a different story.
If only the accounts software was working...0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I think we knew it wasn't going to work straight off!!! If I hadn't been at a clients at the time I would have made a sarcastic comment!!!
I haven't got anyone to pay yet, but have got a subby who's card ran out on the 31st March.
I haven't tried using my Sage CIS software yet, but I guess it's too much to hope that will go smoothly!!! As we're going into the unknown for everyone, I don't suppose anyone will get it right first time, glad I don't work for the Inland Revenue help desk, they must have had some major obuse today!!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I know this is starting to bore people, but I have to get it off my chest.
I had all the relevant HMRC pages bookmarked - verification, guides etc. and they've moved almost all of them.
Now all I get are error messages.
I can't believe it - do they deliberately go out of their way to annoy us?

Re:HMRC Website
Perhaps Malcolm isn't on Holiday this week, but is moonlighting for HMRC????0 -
Re:HMRC Website
It does all sound very Malcolm-like, doesn't it?
I think he's given up repairing the Forum. Perhaps you're right, maybe he isn't on holiday.
Has he jumped ship? Is he coming to a website near you?
Come to think of it, isn't the HMRC e-department based in Sussex? Hastings, Battle of.

Re:HMRC Website
What a surprise!!!!
The PAYE online section of the HMRC website is down again!!!
I'm beginning to think they can read my diary to see when I'm planning to do my online filing!!!!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I did my PAYE yesterday and was very surprised that it went through OK.
I have verified a dozen or so subbies over the phone without any problem. I tried to do one on-line on Monday and haven't heard yet...
:twisted:0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I managed to get some of my end of year payroll done before they took the website down, unfortunately HMRC are obviously on a different time zone to me as the website wasn't due to go until 8pm yesterday and should have been back at 6am this morning.0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Arghh!
I tried to verify a subby last week by phone but because they were a partnership there were lots and lots of queries.
The advisor didn't know how to do it, so in the end, I left it and tried to do it on line.
That didn't work - it said they couldn't be traced.
Rang again this morning and guess what? They are verified!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
Just tried ringing them and they have limited resources today due to...industrial action!0 -
Re:HMRC Website
I tried ringing them yesterday as well, seems like the AAT and HMRC are in competition as to who can offer the worse service!!!!!!0
