Self Study without a training provider

I'm looking at starting level 2 AAT Accounting, a colleague has suggested that the course is not too rigorous and when he did it through a training provider he only consulted his tutor twice.
Would buying the books from Osbourne, self studying and booking the exams with a local centre be a viable option?
I completed an Open University degree by distance learning and managed a couple of distinctions without tutor assistance so think I'm more than capable.
Has anyone done this successfully?

Yes perfectly possible.
Many accountancy students self study, even those pesky Chartered students

Who do I need to contact about being an external student? Does this limit the test centre I can go to?0
