Self Study without a training provider

I'm looking at starting level 2 AAT Accounting, a colleague has suggested that the course is not too rigorous and when he did it through a training provider he only consulted his tutor twice.
Would buying the books from Osbourne, self studying and booking the exams with a local centre be a viable option?
I completed an Open University degree by distance learning and managed a couple of distinctions without tutor assistance so think I'm more than capable.
Has anyone done this successfully?

    Yes perfectly possible.

Many accountancy students self study, even those pesky Chartered students ;)

Who do I need to contact about being an external student? Does this limit the test centre I can go to?
