Im from nottinghamshire and I am finding it very hard to find work in account....
How and where should I be looking for jobs in accounts ?
Suggestions would help greatly

my advice is sign up to all the major agencies,, they are pain in the arse, but keep on thier backs and they will come through for u.
I was made redundant in July i was quiet lucky and it only took me 4 months to find another job, but was ringing every agency everyother day and siging up to new ones each week.0 -
Im having the same problem urggghhh!! im actually working in milton keynes but cant seem to find a job in bham!dammit. id advise you to join agencies, also apply to accountants directly, you can get a list of them from the accountancy age website.

yep thats the way of the world and the credit crunch is hitting everyone really bad.....the idea is that about 5-10% of clients will leave or shut down each and every year of trading . so if you wish to carry on with your own accounting firm then you need to pick up more than 10% !!..... which the person i am current trying to help out is having real trouble with this !0 -

I have personally found Hays Personnel (used to be called Hays Accountancy Personnel) te best, at various points in working life their turnaround time to get you placed is sometimes within a few hours!!
Anyway, from a business perspective - they aren't as expensive for placement fees, etc. as others like Reed etc.0 -

would agree Hayes do seem to have a much more proactive approach to things .0 -

I think they're officially "Hays Accountancy and Finance", which is a division of Hays Specialist Recruitment Ltd. Or something. I'm actually in the middle of a temp placement with them so I should probably know. They have a new website which doesn't quite display properly on some browsers, but here you go:

Don't put that you off, hell i dropped out of college, wandered into hayes and got a placement training to do AAT when was 18.....had no experience then, im not saying its going to be easy but you gotta try, don;t just rely on the website though actaully ring some one up and make an appointment, and get in there and show them some passion to get expereince
.
sry if this sounds like i jsut walked of the street into hayes, i was registered with all the major agencies in our town and it took about 3-4 months to find something, and that was 7 years ago....i think.....0 -

Experience helps a lot, but it isn't essential as you have to start somewhere. Reed.co.uk seem to have quite a few things up this week, some of which are likely to be good starting positions.0 -

Hays your having a laugh i have to agree with Mark several years of bad attempts on missplaced job interviews as well as at one interview been told that they asked for an accountant not a administrator haha lol
Have you tried NHS Direct they sometimes advertise work experence as well as local council and police ect.
All else fails you may have to look for a admin job in practise and work up - personally have done that myself and built over 5 years expereince and enough to fill work expereince for AAT0 -
good call a-vic..........i got a full qualifaction and resent my cv to all the agencies and not one of them come back with a reply ......fully qualified with MAAT !!!!!and still nah dah !!0

funny thing now tho mark i have received calls from HAYS asking if i was interested in applying for a role and now turn them down bfore i see the spec last experence was enough for me very embarassing.
Saying that someone on here put me on to robert half a lot more proffesional and recomend them, i have put applying on hold in part espeically agency but if and when needed i will call on them as i am on there books and was told ring them any time i need to start looking0 -
I will admit that it is hit or miss with hayes, either you get a great contact or some idiot...who says whats a balance sheet rec... Robert half are good but don;t operate here any more as far as i am aware...0

slackda........robert half and hayes and alll the rest have come up blank for a fully qualified accountant with 12 month experience....so im guessing that qualifacation doesnt mean nothing to these people only 15 years experience means something ?0

really!, thats shocking..... but it is reflective of the climate atm, the issue i think atm is that people at your level just arn't moving about or moving on because of the "risk".
Im only fully AAT atm, and i was going up against 10-12 other candidates at interview stange, my current job had 32 people apply......only 8 made it to interview stage.....
It strange that they are comoing up with nothing for you, I would be speaking with the branch manager and complaining about the recruiters , especially if they are showing jobs on the website, but not alot u can do if there are no jobs in your area , but thats my opinion.
Im not saying that agencies are great by any means, they are down there with estate agents.....if you cna't do anythign become a recuiter........ i guess its luck of the draw wether u get a helpful branch or not.0 -
One thing i do advise is try get in the good books with your recurter and they will show you the just in they did with me before they go on the site0

cant believe that you have put "ONLY" AAT, isnt that a silly thing to put as AAT is meant to be the leading starting place for anyone who wishes to go into accounts.....
The one thing that struck me when i signed up to the agencies is that when i signed up i only had the first year and no experience and got told they would struggle because i had no experience and didnt have more of the qualifaction??so now i have got experience and full qualifaction ? what has changed !!!0 -

Sry i mis read you post above when you said you where fully qualified i thought u meant CIMA/ACCA. Alot of my experience in this world is people don't see AAT as fully qualified...man we need more recognition!

have not got a better idea .because i think that anyone looking for a accounts assistant or above go straight to an agency. have not seen a job advertised for a company and by a company in a long time !0 -
I know its hard, but keep on going. Have you considered any volunteer positions just to keep and build your skills up ? This would look great on c.v aswell. Luckily enough a finance based position came up in my work place, i applied and got it. (out of 12 people...woohoo).

Check Job centre, agencies and even the local paper for anything related to finance/accounts etc.0 -

Well apart from dismissal, possibly being escorted from the building and a less than glowing reference towards future employment (many employers ask 'loaded' questions to circumnavigate the bad reference rules), I guess not much else...0
