Hi I became a full member in 1995 and have worked in both accounting practice and industry in various roles. I have been a MIP for approaching 15 years, with 34 years work experience. I have only recently joined the forum and yes sometimes there are still things that I don't know, it doesn't mean I'm incompetent as a MIP - after all you could quite literally be a MIP offering only bookkeeping services.
I have recently posted a question regarding vat and partial exemption and got ONE response suggesting that I should not take on a client without full knowledge ... I am extremely competent with VAT but just thought I would pick the brains of existing MIP's who might have some pointers. As it turns out my sister is a MIP and I work for a firm of Chartered Accountants - my sister could not assist and guess what in my office there are 2 managers, 3 qualified Chartered Accountants, plus AAT/ATT qualified staff - who very kindly did some research for me - as they didn't know either - and we came up with the correct understanding and application following the research.
That's called improving yourself and more importantly CPD - just saying if you don't know don't offer the service is a stupid response - find out, network and use the MIP toolkit - I'm certain there is a free helpline.
The Accountants I work for have staff far more qualified than me who don't always know the answers when sometimes I do - additionally I have been able to provide my experience and knowledge to assist colleagues and point them in the right direction.
My employer has on several ocassions used a helpline to find the correct application or ruling for VAT/Tax etc., to advise their client correctly.
In the meantime I shall continue to post questions and queries and let any silly responses go 'in one ear and out the other' - I'm happy to say I have reached that stage in my life when I have confidence in myself and what I am capable of doing.0 -

Actually, you got two responses - both of which tried to offer you advice and gave you links to HMRC guidance.
