A true 'merging of minds' on multiple levels can be truly awesome.

If they just want the shallow stuff, then best to avoid.

Mutual respect and trust are important...

Sounds like that could get pretty messy! There's usually one side that ends up wanting more I reckon!

TF - who are you talking to? What the heck are you on about?! :-)

*edit*: you posted same time as I, not referring to that post..

Gem asked if it is possible to be friends, or whether it would always be romantic connection and expectations.

    Generally, people don't truly 'commit'.

    Even in one-night stands...

The other post stays - assertiveness...

Most of my buddies are fellas and that's where it stays. The odd naughty thought creeps into my mind admittedly but I lost a very good friend because we took it "one step" further, then we broke up as "lovers". I think you are right in a way Nigel, lots of people can't commit but I can say hand on heart, I would never do that to my hubby no matter how tempted I feel. (OK, pass the sick bucket)

I feel that society guides the way you think about things and the way you react to opportunities.

If you are happy with a friendship, as it is then no probs.

But involvement includes trust, commitment, respect, vulnerability, self-sacrifice, etc.

    And I treat one-night stands as 'mini-relationships'...

    Re:Study Buddy

Through most of my life my friends have been guys. My best friend at school was a guy, and he had an obsession with me since year 8, then in year 11 he realised nothing was going to happen so moved on, but when he did our friendship disappeared.

Since I left school I've seen a lot of his older brother because we catch the same bus to and from work, so we see each other every day and became good friends, yesterday he told me he loves me, and it's so awkward cos I have to see him on the bus home tonight

Also while I was at school a guy called matt used to get bullied but I never had a problem with him, we weren't best of friends but I was nice to him and we would sit together in graphics, we havent seen each other for like 2 years but on monday he told me he loves me. Freak.

The others include all of the chefs where I used to work as a waitress while I was at school, the guy I used to sit next to on the school bus, we're still friends now though which is nice :) but that's all the guys I've had friendships with and it's all turned out wrong.

I really don't want to lose this guy as a friend but he's really not my type and I've never thought of him as anything other than a friend. How am I gonna tell him?!

And Wrangler, you made a commitment, gained a 'merging of minds', and I hope you are now happier than you were before... :D

Edit. When you are younger, everything is more 'intense'. Their feelings are probably genuine, Gem.

And for those that get 'crushes' - it stays for life, guys...

(combination of PhenyEthylAmine and other hormones - genetically-based...)

Edit but for different people throughout life...

Gem, agree with Paul, just tell him, say you don't want to lose his friendship.

    Re:Study Buddy

Then you have lost nothing. You cant have a friend on one persons terms. If he liked you as a person, then he can be your friend, if he only fancied you, you have lost a weird acquaintence.

If he hates you then he isn't much of a friend, he must realise you can't force people into liking or loving you, that's creepy.

    Re:Study Buddy

I think he is a bit weird, if he's anything like his brother anyway, thats what makes me want to get it over with quickly and hope he never mentions it again.

What do I do if he wants a reason why not? Should I just tell him cos I don't want to lose him as a friend? And what shall I say if that isn't a good enough excuse for him?

    Agree. It's mutual negotiation.

Friend should be true friend willing to accept things on your terms. - no strings...

Gem, life is never simple and whatever you do will probably end up biting you on the arse.
The old sage, FG, would advise that you tell him that you value him as a friend, a good friend but that at this time in your life you are not yet ready to form long term affiliations that are more than just friends.
