I'd quite like to know if any action will be taken against the college involved as I feel this is extremely unfair. Other students at different centres were not given this help and as such put at a disavantage. How can the AAT mark papers fairly between those student that recieved help but without it may have got the answer wrong, and those without help that did get the answer wrong.
I'm not asking this because I got it wrong as i did know the calculation but because I feel it it totaly unfair.

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I totally agree, I think it is unfair that those students were given help!!
Not because I was not given help, but because it clearly states on the front of the paper, any members conferring or receiving help during the exam could be disqualified from the exam. Should this not happen when a tutor says something? What were the exam invigilators doing whilst this was happening, they should know the rules, surely?0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I agree with both of your comments, so much so that I have emailed student services to complain. (not had an answer yet...)I did have to sort of guess at what grams-KG was as it wasn't something that was stored in my head along with all the other things I had to remember that day. I think they would have to mark this question down, as it was not something that we had come across before or even been taught. I know some people on other threads have made comments along the line of "everyone should know this calculation", but some students are more mature (in many ways, not just years) and would not hold that information. It will be interesting to see what is in the Assesors Report....0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
do you have the email address for student services and I will email them too. The more people that email then hopefully something will be done about the cheating!!0 -

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I don't understand why you are all getting so worked up about it.
I guess this 'Kilo Question' has caught a few people out. It should not be an requirement to know the metric system for the AAT exam and that's where your arguement should be. I guess when it is marked not to many points if not any are going to be lost if you thought it was 100.
If you all complain the consequences could be some Teacher possibly losing his/hers job, your fellow students maybe having a points deduction. If you still think it's worth complaining then i think your sad!0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
The points awarded to it will be very small and even if they did it wrong but did everything else right they would still pass.Legin wrote:I don't understand why you are all getting so worked up about it.

the the question remains, the the exam invigilator gave them information about that the exam, which isnt allowed under any circumstances0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I wouldn't want anyone who didn't know something as basic as this to be anywhere near my accounts.Legin wrote:It should not be an requirement to know the metric system for the AAT exam and that's where your argument should be.

I agree Chris.0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
Wouldn't it have been covered in process accounting in Intermediate?
I'm sure a lot of the course mentioned the ingredients of things like soap powder and the calculations were in metric.

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I too agree with Chris. This is the Technician Forum where professionals in training reside and I'm absolutely gobsmacked there are people complaining about the alleged intervention of a teacher while lacking basic knowledge of our metric system that's been around for well over thirty years and taught to nearly all school children under the age of ten years old.
What on earth will we have next - people complaining they weren't informed there were 366 days in a leap year and that it occurs only once every four years?0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
This is just standard stuff, they take certain things for granted, they dont specify that you have to read the paper front to back, but it is just assumed that people would know.0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
people are being utterly ridiculous, I dont think knowing the metric system is common knowledge so why are all you people posting sarcastic comments, like what is pennies into pounds and how many days are ina year!! Just because you don't know what grams into kilograms is, does not mean you cannot produce a set of accounts!!!
When in the financial side of accounting have you ever converted grams into kilograms, i dont think so. sort your lives out people and stop taking the mick out of clearly stressed out students!!!0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
The AAT don't teach you that there are a hundred pennies to one pound either...
... some fundamental knowledge is quite fairly assumed to already be in place before tackling monetary exams involving standard weights and measures.0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
Sam 85,
I resent that comment. I have been on here along with others on this thread, answering questions and helping students leading up to exams. I think we were just surprised at this situation, its not a personal attack on any fellow students, it is just a strange circumstance.0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
Things like pennies into the pounds, that is common sense. I mean any human being deals with money on a daily basis so why wouldn't they know that, I haven't dealt with grams and kilograms in years, so why would that be common knowledge, if you dont use them?0 -

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
Isn't that the bill my company received from peugeot for what we thought was 'free' accountancy advice...?
It has been a long way from the park bench for him though but now he's made it, he just doesn't seem to be one of us anymore...0 -

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
The fact of the matter is the college should never have told anybody anything during an exam, it doesn't matter what question it was!!! why didn't the college just give out all the answers, its an exam!!!0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
Well you know what thought did, Robert! "Free advice" are 2 words that do not exist in my accounting vocabulary!
I thought everyone was supposed to de-stress after exam week! I have to say though I do understand why some students are a little bit hacked off when another student informs us their tutor has helped them in the exam. Candidates cheating is not uncommon but tutors shouting the answer out - surely that's got to be a first! It never happened when I was a student!

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
It may be common knowledge but when dealing with the technical aspects of the budgets it was an unecessary complication which has clearly confused many students, myself included. I think AAT will respond cautiously when setting the pass level for PCR, to avoid uproar from many agrieved students.0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
The problem remains, that a teacher should not have gone into an exam room and told his/her students this conversion. There is so much stress involved with sitting an exam that even if you do know grams to KG, its something that you could quite easily forget under this pressure.
This is the reply to the email that I sent regarding this;
"As the knowledge that 1kg = 1,000g is not what we were testing for, any candidates who used 100 g per kg will not lose marks, even though this yields numbers that donΓ’β¬β’t make sense. So candidates who didnΓ’β¬β’t know how many g in a Kg will be at no disadvantage in terms of available marks. The Exam Review Panel will also be made aware of the fact that some candidates were unaware that 1Kg = 1,000g.
We take all student feedback seriously and we will investigate the claims fully. This will include checking queries received on the day and centre reports.
Finally, please could you tell your friends on the board that the best way to send us feedback is via our online exam questionnaire http://www.aat.org.uk/surveys/examsstudentfeedback/ and the email address at the end of the questionnaire, rather than sending emails to Student Services. This ensures that all feedback is kept together and given equal attention"

If you dont know how many grams are in a kilo your obviously not as smart as you thought you were.lizmcginn wrote:The problem remains, that a teacher should not have gone into an exam room and told his/her students this conversion. 1.stop winging and moaning if you failed it was because your accounts werent upto scratch not because you didnt know some common knowledge
2.the examiner put it in there on purpose, it was no accident all you had to do was read the question properly
3.dont complain to the AAT because theres nothing you can do about it now, this has come up in past papers and was covered in intermediate level you should have been aware AAT could bring this up0 -

Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
I agree, I am 50 and have always regarded metric as "French", Ipods and fancy phones are of no interest to me. My sons claim I am the only person they know who still uses cassettes. Fine products. I didnt know who many grams in a kilo either but it became obvious in the exam because the figures where so far adrift. Once I thought about it it was fine. Good luck to the tutor0 -
Re:Re tutor giving information during PCR exam
How about if a question had used the term ΓΒ£5k?0
